Malcolm Wilcox at Westcroft, 4th April - 4th May
‘This Special Place’
Malcolm trained at Croydon School of Art and The Royal College of Art as an illustrator and graphic designer. After a brief period in advertising in London he moved to Plymouth to set up the graphic design studio at Westward Television and chose to live on the Cornish side of the Tamar at Millbrook and went to work on a little ferry boat .
Malcolm moved to the Midlands and was a lecturer at Birmingham Polytechnic for some years before leaving to set up a design and manufacturing company called Sari Fabrics in Leamington Spa.
Recently Malcolm has been travelling extensively painting landscapes and architecture in most parts of Europe including Andalucia and Provence, Turkey, Morocco, India, China, the USA, Croatia and Symi in Greece.
This selection of his work shows recent paintings of Cawsand and Kingsand in Cornwall and Symi in Greece.
Malcolm on Cawsand
“ I return to this special place, this secret corner of Cornwall again
and again. It is still unspoilt, and it is like being on a wonderful island.
I am fascinated by the blocks and shapes of the buildings in the villages
and the setting against Mount Edgecombe and the great sea. It is almost
unreal, a theatrical set emerging, there is great magic here.”
Malcolm on Symi
“ I try to capture the atmosphere and the magic of the reflected light
on the Venetian buildings from the piercing sun, and the multiplicity
of the blocks, through the use of minimal expressive marks, almost like
a glimpse.
I use mixed media, including watercolour, gesso, gouache, acrylic and collage.”
